Hear From One of Our Volunteers

The Barrie Literacy Council appreciates and values the contribution of every volunteer who joins our organization.

You will find that adult literacy tutoring is an immensely rewarding volunteer activity. You are assisting your student to gain practical, every day skills and knowledge that most of us take for granted.

The Council holds volunteer tutor training workshops several times a year, offering both daytime and evening sessions. The training takes a total of 18 hours and prepares you to work one-on-one with an adult who wants to learn..

Volunteer Stories

One day, I was listening to a radio broadcast on the subject of Volunteering. The speaker zeroed in on the best way to be a successful volunteer: “if you are interested in volunteering, choose an area you enjoy yourself”.

I thought about this, and since I have been an avid reader starting from when I could hold a book in my hands, to this day when I realized not only is there pleasure in reading every day, but the influence reading has had in my life and those around me.

The Barrie Literacy Council supports many diverse learning outcomes, but they all start with knowing that a strong foundation in literacy skills builds a stronger, more confident and capable person.

Working with my student on what could be considered the basics is monumental to them, but for me is just as important.

Volunteering as a tutor at the Barrie Literacy Council for the past 15 years has brought me a lot of pleasure. It is a great feeling to be able to help an adult student reach their dreams and goals of learning. Each student has different needs, whether it be reading, math or obtaining a driver’s license. I always think that I learn as much from our students as I teach them.
