Learning Activities – activities that demonstrates progress.  They are assigned to a “task” and help learner develop skills and gain specific knowledge to master that task.

Learning activities are not milestones.

Milestones – standardized assessment tools provided by MTCU to measure progress.  They are administered after a number of learning activities have been done, and are intended to show that the student has mastered most of the skills within a certain level and competency.

Milestones are obtained from staff and can be administered by staff or tutor.  They must be returned to staff upon completion to be marked and recorded.

Milestones are not learning activities.

Tasks – practical activities the student needs to master in order to successfully move on in their goal path.  The Key Tasks are usually larger categories that can be broken down into smaller tasks.  The Key Tasks are determined initially by the student and assessor upon entry into the program and are shown as bubbles on the student’s learning plan.

Learning Plans – personalized action plans developed with the student to help them set and meet short and long-term goals.

The first part looks like a bubble diagram and is titled “Key Tasks”.  It is more of a big picture learning plan and lays out the key tasks the student needs to accomplish in order to move on in their goal path (middle bubble).  The Key Task learning plan is created during assessment.

The second part looks like a set of steps and is titled “Goal Steps”.  It focuses on shorter-term goals that can be accomplished in 2 – 3 months and tie into one of the Key Tasks.  It sets out the steps the student needs to work on to achieve the short-term goal, and it suggests some useful resources and activities.  This learning plan is usually just a component of the larger Key Task, not the whole thing.  They are created during the learning plan meeting.
